Review of School Age CYPIT Reading

Since attending a mainstream Language Resource Unit that commissions therapy services from Berkshire Healthcare my son has received a very good quality of therapy from [name removed], the Speech and Language Therapist. [name removed] is approachable and takes a genuine interest in my son. She communicates his progress well and I always feel comfortable and listened to when discussing his strengths and difficulties with her and she gives an excellent level of insight into his development. She has worked with him weekly for nearly a year now and I feel like she really understands him and his needs, is thorough, gives good advice, and liases well with his class teachers and support staff. I can see an improvement in my son’s speech and language skills and I feel very lucky that [name removed] is such an integral part of my son’s therapy. We couldn’t have asked for a better SLT. Also credit to [name removed], who has only ever been involved in a managerial role rather than direct therapy with my son, but has nonetheless given very helpful, detailed and thoughtful advice to me as a parent.

Suggested improvements
Whilst [name removed] is a brilliant SLT and I am very happy with her services, prior to attending a mainstream unit, the assessment, input and advice my son received from the other Speech and Language Therapists in clinic was regrettably not good. Therapy sessions were sparsely recommended and sometimes seemed rushed, advice was very basic and general, there was minimal to no liaison with other professionals working with my son, and there was a serious and concerning lack of continuity of care which prevented any one therapist from truly grasping my son’s abilities and allowed him to be deprived of the support he needed - rarely did my son ever see the same therapist twice and never did they know what to do with a child who was entitled to their services but not attending a school that was already commissioning them.
